2023 – Publication Design
Liminal Figures is a collaborative Senior Capstone project that documents the students’ Capstone research while simultaneously showcasing their adaptability during their displacement from the Appalachian State University art building.
This publication commemorates the ways we have embraced transitional phases in our lives and navigated a state of liminality as we move between inspiration and realization. Through our writing, project documentation, and new imagery created for this publication, we celebrate design’s capacity to illuminate that which is in the process of becoming and shape our interconnected future.
"As someone who is constantly filled with curiosity, I don’t like to limit my interests or capabilities, whether it’s in the realm of web design, illustration, publication design, branding, or any other category or classification of creative work. Instead, I constantly seek to broaden my horizons. It is this passion for exploration, along with my love for the outdoors, that drives my creative practice.
I believe that when the future is so uncertain and finite, it makes life all the more special. Every day, every experience, every connection should be embraced with love, kindness, passion, and an adventurous spirit. I also believe in the power of nature. As an avid hiker, backpacker, camper, and general outdoor enthusiast, I believe in spending time in and celebrating the outdoors. It is this perspective that fuels my goal in design- to make meaningful work that tells stories of human experience and inspires people to go outside and try new things.
I hope to create moments of self-reflection, growth, action, connection, community-building, and inspiration. I hope to help people see that every day is an opportunity for adventure."
Through a diverse range of methods and contexts, our capstone research confronts the intricate process of becoming. The work documented here examines design’s ability to transform physical space, how the spaces we inhabit impact our design practices, and opportunities to comunicate personal histories and metamorphoses through the structural modes of graphic design.
After completing the publication, the class organized a book launch at a local brewery, SouthEnd Brewing Company. Promotional materials were created for the event.
